<image:title>portfolio - The sun is a painter - The Sun is a painter</image:title>
<image:caption>Today marks the winter solstice, the darkest day of the year, and the beginning of the return of the sun. This scorching ball that centres the solar system, is a true diva. She has guided us since time immemorial. Ancient civilizations would use the sun to mark the year, to keep track of time, livelihoods, to make fires. Today, I reflect on the poetic antidotes against systemic issues that the sun reminds me of. & . When I lived in London, a rare sunny day was a reminder to enjoy life. Offices would sometimes close earlier so people could enjoy a Pimms in the park. On Sundays, families and friend groups would prepare picnics and head to the lakes and parks. Sun that reminds us to dance together. To know about the relevance of joy as a revolutionary tool, you can look at the work of bell hooks, who passed away too soon last week. . I recently discovered that some indigenous communities in Mexico did not distinguish night from day, but they look at the position of the sun. Sun that reminds us that there are no boundaries, but perpetual nuances. Non-binarism is inherently revolutionary in a society where hierarchies prevail, see more here. . The other day I got anxious, so I went outside and found a spot where the sun could soothe me. I was forced to close my eyes in its potent light, I was forced to rest and abandon. Sun that reminds us that rest is imperative. Sun Day, day of rest. Rest is a practice of resistance, as The Nap Ministry teaches. Happy winter solstice my friends, may you be reminded of these things today.</image:caption>

<image:title>portfolio - 6 poetic antidotes to violence against women - 6 poetic antidotes for systemic violence</image:title>
<image:caption>Yesterday was International Day to end all violence against women and girls, but truly this is an everyday fight. Gender-based violence is an epidemic that is centuries old. It has no colour, class, or race; it is psychological, physical and sexual. The power dynamics that put one sex, race, class on top of another are at the root of this systemic issue. Here are 6 poetic antidotes to the toxic narratives that feed these systemic issues. ✨Learn about love as freedom practice- Our perception of love is shaped by the systems we inhabit. The love we know is unrealistically romantic, it tells us we have no agency in how we build relationships and that everything falls from the sky. Love takes practice, and it exists in romantic relationships just as much as friendships and family bonds. The systems that perpetuate violence against women are not based on love. To define and understand love intellectually read bell hooks, Brigitte Vasallo, and Esther Perel. ✨Dance — A dancer once told me “[Dance] is also the language of healing, it is also the language of expressing, the language of telling a story”. Reclaiming body is reclaiming the story around it. How can you insert dancing into your to-do list? ✨ Decondition softly — know that the road is long, and forgive yourself for the times where incoherence comes, and the times when ignorance will shame you. The road to change is not linear, nor is it without error. Minna Salami has great insights on this. ✨Slow the F down — do it for a day or an hour or half an hour. Taking time is the biggest fuck you to a society based on productivity and rushing to the finish line (which doesn’t exist spoiler alert). The Nap Ministry have some amazing insight on rest as a form of resistance. ✨Inhabit plurality — Accepting plurality requires a rejection of hierarchy, you see where I am going here? Check the work of indigenous activists and study indigenous knowledge. The work of Aura Cumes, Nina Gualingua, Olivia Palma can bring you to other resources. Be curious! ✨Practice pleasure- eat, masturbate, enjoy life without feeling guilty. Adrienne Maree Brown and Venus O’Hara are incredible in spreading the art of pleasure as a political practice.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“There is honesty in art, and whilst not everyone relates to every art style, Iall humans can relate to an artful existence, for it is innate.” The Art Corner is a monthly column that I created on The Tilt. It is a place that exists without time and space. Here, narratives are weaved in conversation. Poets, painters, writers, singers, dancers, photographers and shamans have all stepped into this corner and gifted us their revolutionary thoughts and poetic contributions. Here, we contemplate beauty, space, racism, identity, imagination, masculinity. We unravel humanity’s complexity.</image:caption>

<image:title>portfolio - 5 things men need to know before learning about feminism - 5 things men need to know before learning about feminism</image:title>
<image:caption>1. Don’t take it personally. The anger is not directed at you personally (unless you are being disrespectful or violent). It usually comes from trauma or exhaustion. Women have been persecuted in for centuries (see witches trials, rate of sexual violence, domestic abuse, or access to human rights such as abortion). We are angry, and are justified. 2. You will have to inform yourself and ask questions, not give your opinion. There will be many different opinions and way of approaching, you get to choose which one works best for you. 3. It will be uncomfortable. What you as a man represent is the perpetrator, many will need to get past this. Use compassion and respect in dialogue and conversation. 4. Be ready to listen. 5. Don’t expect women to do the work for you, come with questions but don’t expect lectures. Women give enough free labour as it is. Last but not least, for those who are truly serious, thankyou for taking the time, for doubting yourself, and wanting to change.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The word radical comes from the Latin word radix (radice) meaning root. In botany, the radicle (coming from radix) is the first part of a seedling—a growing plant embryo—to emerge from the seed during the process of germination.⁣ ⁣It is the embryonic root that extends down into the ground to suck up water so the plant can eventually send out its leaves and start photosynthesizing. ⁣To do this, the radicle requires enormous strength. ⁣⁣Under the soil, roots communicate with each other about possible dangers, in part by providing nurture, to keep one another alive. This is possible thanks to a symbiotic relationship called mycorrhiza that happens between respective plants and mycelium, a fungal network that grows inside roots connecting them underground. Almost every place we walk on has mycelium under the soil, like an invisible network of survival. These root systems are not unlike the endlessly radical—or radicle—work that women have done for each other to oppose the structures that oppress them. Under the veil of a system that seeks to control our bodies, we talk to each other about trauma, we find safety in the darkness.⁣</image:caption>

<image:title>portfolio - Reflections on love - Reflections on Love</image:title>
<image:caption>bell hooks defines the dimensions of love as “care, commitment, trust, responsibility, respect, and knowledge” I’ve been reflecting on love as a radical revolutionary act. Something you have agency on, something you choose and work on. Dismantling the layers that have been imposed on me by societal expectations around love is hard, I find myself often in a tug of war with patriarchal narratives, with expectations of myself and others that don’t match the truth. No one is teaching me Love better than bell hooks. In her book All About Love (new visions) she creates a stunning portrayal of love as tender labour, as a resizing of all our relationships (romantic and not), she talks of love and community, friendship, family. To love is to question: What burdens and traumas do we carry? What are we willing to do with them? How can I build a loving relationship that is true to who I am? hooks talks of love with an embracing tenderness, she tells us love cannot coexist with abuse, of any kind, she teaches that love and justice are closer than we know. I cannot recommend this book enough, it is gentle and beautiful.</image:caption>

<image:title>portfolio - The Art Corner with Ilana Harris Babou - Interview with Ilana Harris Babou</image:title>
<image:caption>On a rare rainy day in Barcelona, I decided that visiting an exhibition about Mars was the right thing to do. I was standing between a video installation of the sky on Mars and a series of comics — called Amazing Stories — about Martian realities, when I read this phrase: “Imagination always finds a way of scaling the walls imposed by every genre or discipline.” Human beings require imagination for healing and creativity just as much as we need it to achieve social justice. Imagined realities act as expanding experiences in oppressive systems. During the Cold War, Martian realities became extremely popular in cinema and comics, one of the reasons was to explore Otherness and escape from the very real and perpetual fear that was characteristic of that time. Speaking of imagination, this month I travelled with it to Brooklyn NY, where Ilana Harris-Babou welcomed me in her beautiful studio, turned Art Corner for the occasion. Harris-Babou is an artist and educator from Brooklyn who creates imagined realities through video, installations, and sculpture to question paradigms. Read the full piece here.</image:caption>

<image:title>portfolio - A dance with lady death - A Dance with Lady Death</image:title>
<image:caption>The lunar eclipse happening this week, on a beautiful full moon that is lighting the night sky already, asks me to dance with Lady Death. I have been thinking of death, not necessarily as the loss of life, but as the inevitable transformation that change requires; the night before the day, the fire before a seed is born, the breaking of the waters before life is born. ⁣ ⁣ I strive to surrender with tenderness to this graceful dance, carried by the waves into whatever needs to come. Fate is a dance with death and life, and as I step into vulnerable waters, I must let go of resistance with grace (current mantra).⁣ ⁣ We are taught that death brings more death, yet do you ever think the night won't turn into day? We fear being transformed without knowing exactly how that will look like, yet we are constantly transformed whether we want it or not. ⁣ ⁣ Trust is a conscious relationship with the unknown, as Esther Perel wisely reminded me yesterday morning. ⁣ ⁣ To think of death as an ending before a beginning is to accept that with every ending there is a lesson, a birth, it is an embrace of the inevitable life/death/life cycle we are constantly moving through. In this acceptance, love can plant its roots.</image:caption>

<image:title>portfolio - An Ode to Error - Ode to Error</image:title>
<image:caption>In my writing and activism, I strongly value accepting soft changes in minds and hearts to debunk our fear of imperfection. ⁣ Mistakes are a fundamental part of my writing process, frustration and anger too. Today I was struggling with the idea of surrender as I find resistance to new beginnings, no matter their weight. ⁣ ⁣ It was not so long ago that I shared my process of finding surrender’s meaning, and talking about it like I owned it. Some would say I am incoherent. But it is a truth that my knowledge and words are sometimes more evolved than my mind, which is still conditioned. ⁣I am ok with that. ⁣ Whilst there is more alignment moving forward, there are temporary incoherences, repeated mistakes. Around me, I see too many people (including myself often) refusing to move forward for fear of making mistakes, not speaking up for fear of being judged as erroneous. Fear of error can be paralysing. ⁣ ⁣ Unlearning is key, especially when it comes to feminism and social justice, we see this word a lot now. ⁣ ⁣ But many don’t like it. For example, a friend once told me not to use that word because most don’t like the idea of “unlearning” - I am often told how to rebrand my cause to be more liked- because it implied that they had been doing it wrong all the time. And so what? I thought. ⁣ ⁣ Allowing mistakes, rooted in respect for the other, honesty, curiosity and humility is a fundamental part of changing this society. Too much silencing comes from a place of rejection of error, of unawareness of our limitations, we want to be blind in front of our own imperfections. ⁣ Unromanticised, real, honest momentary truths are also mistakes then, and I will continue making them and hope you do too. ⁣ ACCESS FULL ARTICLE HERE</image:caption>

<image:caption>I spent my New Year’s Eve 2020 alone, in front of a fire, writing about the incredible Betty Davis. It was one of the best NYE ever. Her story brought to my attention an issue that is rampant in society: we are not allowed to have control of our own narrative. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Betty Davis lived life on her own terms and never compromised her narrative away. I suggest you read this listening to her album ‘Nasty Gal’. ⁣⁣ I thank Phil Cox, the Director of the documentary Betty Davis: They say I’m different, who welcomed me into the story with open arms and shared the grandeur of Betty with me from an intimate perspective. <image:caption>In my latest reflection, I attempt to delve into the spiritual from a rooted point of view. Here, I explore the connection that humans have with spirituality (I explain in the essay what I mean by this term), and I suggest a way in which we can rethink and revisit how we look at 'spirituality'- the term has, in my opinion, acquired a superficiality that doesn't belong to it.⁣ ⁣ Rather, it is an act of necessity and political power, grounded in the feminine. ⁣ ⁣ "Anything we worship requires respect, dedication and compassion, so perhaps it would be beneficial to worship ourselves, our bodies, the earth, the elements. This is where religious institutions often fail in my opinion; by giving us structures and dogmas, they take away our agency."⁣ Find the whole piece here.</image:caption>

Using this question as a guide, I went on a journey to describe climate change and the power of the human in connecting with nature. In the research to access and incorporate a philosophy of life that was culturally tied to nature, I shifted to find the answers in the people mainly responsible for the preservation of this earth: indigenous communities. I interviewed Indigenous scholars from Mexico and Lesotho and through incredibly fulfilling conversations we managed to weave a narrative that could reframe the way we look at our individual role in reversing climate change. <image:title>portfolio - On talking about sexual trauma - On talking to a woman about sexual trauma</image:title>
<image:caption>The other day, I sat with some friends chatting about life. When the subject of harassment and sexual abuse came out, my friend described an episode that she was involved in. In a very natural reaction, her boyfriend asked questions about the details of harassment and abuse: “who was he?”, “where were you?” “did you know him?” “where had you met him?” “but like, where did he put his hand?”. This is a very human response; if someone we care about has been hurt a common reaction is to feel a sense of responsibility for not being able to do anything. We want to feel useful, resolve their problems by finding a reason why they were harassed or abused. But I think it is important to know that the best a man can do when sexual trauma is being explained to you by a woman you care about is to be in a position that is humble, free of judgement and rooted in listening. Don’t ask, just be there, and know that the person will share what they want to share, and it is not in your right to know the details, or to try and solve the situation. This is not your story. It might be in the past, but it is still very present in the person sharing her experience, and this is a moment to leave that space. You can offer your love and compassion, that is the only thing you have control on. It is a delicate space, where love and calm are the best thing you can offer. It is also important that who is listening knows that trauma is subjective, unlike the media has often portrayed. It doesn’t always matter what was done, what matters is how it was received and why. We know that one in three women has been harassed or abused, so the probabilities that a loved one has been are high. If and when she decides to share her experience offer that listening space silently, and let her know that you are here however she wants you to be. Full article here</image:caption>

What are the silent rebellions happening? What do they mean? Sneak peak: At the beginning of the year, I made a commitment to reclaiming the feminine through new narratives, and in this reflection I am going to look at why silence and introspection are key.⁣ .⁣ In this essay, I examine the power of silence and introspection as revolutionary tools. ⁣ .⁣ I would like you to think of this silence as feminine: poised, graceful, patient, introspective and at the same time assertive, irremovable and powerful. <image:title>portfolio - On Writing Part Three - On Writing Part III</image:title>
<image:caption>Who do you write for? This is a question I often must ask myself, and I still can’t properly answer it. When I have an urge I write because if I don’t I feel sick. It would be unnatural not to write. Sometimes I write for another person in particular but as time goes by the receiver of that writing looses meaning in my life and someone else gains it and the same words count for them as well. The writings are neutral and filled with meaning and direction at the same time. They mean nothing to someone and everything to others. They are written for me and also for other people. When ego comes to play they are written for the thousands of people I imagine will read my writing and resonate with it, but they are also written for no one. Whenever I try to answer that question I enter a void where I am unable to provide one answer, probably because there isn’t one. I write therefore I am?</image:caption>

<image:title>portfolio - The Power of Two (or more) - The Power of Two (or more)</image:title>
<image:caption>There is power in accepting and observing dualities, we often don’t realise that. Accepting that two (or more) opposite things can coexist in a constant state of impermanence is very hard in the modern world: people want single truths, they want one ideal to follow, they want consistency, they want black or white, or grey. This search for one right road, one definition of them and others, one right or wrong argument often creates frustration and inconclusiveness. It would benefit us all if we took a step back and accepted that there are multiple layers in action in each and every one of us and those affect the things we think and say. Accepting dualities would make us listen to each other more, it would make us stop having senseless conversations based on criticising the other for being “inconsistent” and rather let us focus on our differences and find compromise, it would help people focus more on the important message of activists rather than scrutinize their every inconsistency or mistake. It would bring people together rather than set them apart. Accepting our own dualities and multitudes is also a way of loving all of parts, and therefore ourselves. I read today that it is actually healthier for our psyche and emotional stability to accept and listen to our “negative” parts. Black and white, heavy and free, happy and sad can coexist. Humans are imperfect, by nature. Try replacing your “or” with “and” and see what happens. Use it wisely. ❤️</image:caption>

<image:title>portfolio - Question Everything. - Question Everything.</image:title>
<image:caption>I have been exposed to a narrow vision, my conditioning has blinded my judgement. And so, I want to share this mantra I wrote with you. “Question everything, the way you have been told about history, the people involved, the people left out of the narrative. Acknowledge your privilege, always. Know that it has conditioned you in ways so subtle they are integrated into your skin tone and have been made invisible to you. Who are you? What is the colour of your skin? Your sexual orientation? your gender (if you believe it exists)? Question how your education, the loves you have been exposed to, your social status, your parents (the list could go on), have conditioned your way of thinking. We base our story on the narrative we are exposed to, and that is not an ultimate truth. History is conditioned by those who tell it, and therefore so is your reality.” Feel free to question me. .</image:caption>

<image:caption>We are born from destruction. The amniotic sac that keeps us safe for nine months in our mother’s belly is ruptured to begin the process of birth. The egg needs to crack before the bird can get out, the larvae is destroyed to create a butterfly, the sperm breaks into the egg to start the process of creation. In Hindu mythology Shiva is both the God of creation and destruction, for the latter is fundamental to reconstruct, to re-invent. We die a thousand times in our lives, different versions of us are born as we create new ones. Destruction is a fundamental part of growth, and every transformation requires a death of sorts. So, let yourself die as many times as you believe is necessary, observe how nature is constantly recreating itself, and how we live a life of cycles. Trust. Every destruction will create something new. Like the moon disappears every month from our vision, a seeming death, let yourself be reborn over and over again.</image:caption>

<image:title>portfolio - Culture Makes Reality</image:title>
<image:caption>Culture makes reality, it governs identity: preserving it is sacrosanct. Giving more space to Art, artisans, music, writing and painting is fundamental to preserve uniqueness. Indigenous population form 5 to 8% of the whole population of Panama. There are approximately nine indigenous groups in Panama who classify under 7 types of cultures: Kunas, Ngobe, Bugle, Embers, Wounaan, Talamanca, Bokota and Teribes. These ethnic groups fight every single day to protect their ancestral lands and their cultural identity. The work that @desdeelsurconamor does gives value and voice to these communities, and does so by respecting and promoting the women artisan of the Kuna population amongst others. I wrote a poem for them, but also for all indigenous women who through their art and meticulous work preserve culture. I am honoured to have collaborated in this project and hope to do more in the future.</image:caption>
